Tanker explodes after hitting mine in Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Guard says

A petrol tanker exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The incident was reported on Saturday and involved one of the world's most important oil transit routes. No independent confirmation of the circumstances has been provided so far.

The Guard did not disclose the vessel's name, flag or origin. It also gave no details on possible casualties or the extent of the damage. Iranian state media carried the account, but the available information remains limited and unverified by outside sources.

The reported blast comes amid a sharp rise in pressure on commercial shipping in the strait. Maritime security sources have recorded a series of attacks, attempted attacks and intimidation incidents involving oil and gas carriers in the area. A recent tally cited at least 12 incidents between 28 September and 5 October, while data from the International Maritime Organization pointed to nine occurrences in the same period.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman that links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, which makes any disruption there significant for shipping, insurers and oil markets. The latest report adds to concerns that commercial vessels are facing a more dangerous operating environment in the region.

The incident also follows other recent maritime security cases in the same area. India's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that 12 crew members were injured after a projectile hit the Panama-flagged tanker On Peace while it was passing through the strait. On the same day, the United Arab Emirates National Guard said it rescued 22 crew members from a tanker that caught fire in the Persian Gulf, with the sailors reported in stable condition after first aid.

What remains unclear is whether the tanker reported by Iran was the same vessel involved in any of the other recent incidents, and whether the fire was caused solely by a mine strike. The vessel's identity, the number of people on board and the scale of the damage have not been confirmed. Further official statements would be needed to establish the full circumstances and any wider impact on traffic through the strait.
