Switzerland to Chair OSCE for Third Time in 2026

Switzerland has been selected to chair the OSCE in 2026, its third tenure leading the organization since its inception. The OSCE, which focuses on conflict prevention, crisis management, and cooperation across Europe and Eurasia, benefits from Switzerlandâs historic involvement as a founding signatory of the Helsinki Final Act in 1975 and key participant in Cold War-era negotiations.
This chairmanship places Switzerland at the center of diplomatic efforts to address security challenges amid escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly in Eastern Europe, where the OSCE continues monitoring conflicts and fostering dialogue. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis is tasked with representing the Swiss Chairpersonship, highlighting the countryâs diplomatic stature.
The chair role will require Switzerland to direct multilateral initiatives, coordinate OSCE institutions, and engage with member states on issues such as arms control, human rights, and conflict resolution. Switzerlandâs neutral stance and diplomatic experience position it to facilitate dialogue amid ongoing regional instability.
Switzerlandâs leadership comes at a pivotal time for European security as the OSCE navigates complex crises including the war in Ukraine and expanded security threats. Its chairmanship could influence broader international efforts to manage tensions and promote stability.
