The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has released a report detailing how illegal waste trafficking is driving significant environmental pollution and public health risks globally. This illicit trade particularly affects low-income countries, where weak legal systems and enforcement capacity enable criminals to profit while causing lasting harm. The report identifies five main categories of illegally trafficked waste: electronic waste, plastic waste, end-of-life vehicles and engines, metal wastes, and mixed waste.
